چکیده

This paper develops a constitutive description and a computational treatment of anisotropic friction within the context of the finite element method. The theoretical approach makes use of structural tensors that characterize texture, are convected with the material surfaces, and represent the symmetries that reflect changes in relative orientation of the surfaces. In the discrete setting, the texture is mapped using techniques adapted from discrete differential geometry and computer graphics. In addition, the traction fields are interpolated smoothly on the surfaces and the stick-slip condition is enforced sharply via Lagrange multipliers. Published by Elsevier B.V.

The stress response in confined arrays of frictional and frictionless particles

Stress transmission inside three-dimensional granular packings is investigated using computer simulations. Localized force perturbation techniques are implemented for frictionless and frictional shallow, ordered, granular arrays confined by solid boundaries for a range of system sizes. Stress response profiles for frictional packings agree well with the predictions for the semi-infinite halfpla...

Simulating Wide Band Radar Response from Pec Targets Using Phase Extracted Basis Functions

In this paper, we first review the Phase Extracted (PE) basis functions by recalling the derivation which shows that the induced current on a PEC surface has the propagating phase factor the same as the incident wave in a scattering problem. The wide band characteristic of this PE basis functions has been investigated by demonstrating that very wide band radar response from PEC objects can be s...

Non-regularised Inverse Finite Element Analysis for 3D Traction Force Microscopy

The tractions that cells exert on a gel substrate from the observed displacements is an increasingly attractive and valuable information in biomedical experiments. The computation of these tractions requires in general the solution of an inverse problem. Here, we resort to the discretisation with finite elements of the associated direct variational formulation, and solve the inverse analysis us...

An anisotropic biphasic theory of tissue-equivalent mechanics: the interplay among cell traction, fibrillar network deformation, fibril alignment, and cell contact guidance.

We present a general mathematical theory for the mechanical interplay in tissue-equivalents (cell-populated collagen gels): Cell traction leads to compaction of the fibrillar collagen network, which for certain conditions such as a mechanical constraint or inhomogeneous cell distribution, can result in inhomogeneous compaction and consequently fibril alignment, leading to cell contact guidance,...

Stepping over obstacles of different heights and varied shoe traction alter the kinetic strategies of the leading limb.

This study aims to investigate the effects of shoe traction and obstacle height on friction during walking to better understand the mechanisms required to avoid slippage following obstacle clearance. Ten male subjects walked at a self-selected pace during eight different conditions: four obstacle heights (0%, 10%, 20% and 40% of limb length) while wearing two different pairs of shoes (low and h...
